Italy won this World cup hosted in Spain beating West Germany 3-1 in the final. This tournament was first time 24 teams had played in the finals. Cameroon qualified for the first time and performed very well holding Poland and Italy to draws and were cruelly denied a place in next round on the basis of having scored fewer goals than Italy.
